Ask us when the best time to bring your dog to the coast is, and plenty of people are surprised by the answer. Winter. The beaches empty out, the walks are better in the cool air, and your dog gets the run of the place. A pet friendly winter getaway on the South Coast is one of the quiet joys of staying down here, and it is easy to see why once you have done it.
We are family run and pet friendly, and we sit right on Cudmirrah Beach between Sussex Inlet and Berrara. Here is why the cold months are our favourite time to have you and your dog to stay.
Empty beaches, and more of them for your dog
In winter you often get the sand to yourself. Cudmirrah Beach is dog friendly on lead and it is the beach our park backs straight onto, so the walk starts at your front door. In the cooler months it is calm, quiet and yours, with space to throw a ball and none of the summer crowds. For a lot of dogs, this is the beach at its best. When they want a proper run, the off leash area at Swan Lake is a five minute drive away.
Better weather for walking
Dogs do not love the heat, and neither do their owners on a long walk. Winter is made for it. The crisp air is perfect for the bush tracks around Conjola National Park and the coastal paths nearby, and you can walk all day without anyone overheating. For a few ideas close to home, have a look at our favourite pet friendly bushwalks in the Shoalhaven.
Whales from the beach, with your dog beside you
Winter is whale season on the South Coast. The humpbacks migrate along the coast from around May, and you can often watch them from the headlands right here while your dog sniffs about beside you. If you want a closer look, local operators like Jervis Bay Wild run tours from nearby Huskisson. It is a simple, memorable way to spend a winter morning, and watching from the sand costs nothing.
Warm up with a coffee or a meal
After a morning on the beach, our very own Cuddy Cafe is an easy stroll and welcomes dogs, which makes it the perfect way to thaw out. There are plenty of other dog friendly spots nearby too. We have rounded up our favourites in our guide to pet friendly food destinations on the South Coast, from Sussex Inlet up to Jervis Bay.
Warm, welcome and cosy, all year
Plenty of parks shut the gate on dogs over the busy months. We do not. Well behaved dogs are welcome at Surfside every week of the year, winter included. You can read the details on our pet policy page before you come. Every one of our cabins, caravans and campsites is pet friendly, and the cabins and vans are cosy and comfortable when the weather turns, so you and your dog have somewhere warm to come back to after a day in the fresh air.
A quieter, better value time to visit
Winter is our quiet season, which means the park is peaceful and stays are easier to book. It is a gentle, good value time to bring the family and the dog down for a few nights, or a full week if you can manage it.
